The police and the army dominate both states and human rights are being replaced by militarist slogans. We are asking ourselves - how did it happen? Why do these regimes allow themselves to invade neighboring Ukraine, and threaten the world with nuclear weapons? What is going on in the heads of the ordinary people there?
We are the artists from "out there". We have seen how these ideologies grow on the fertile soil of public stereotypes and "common knowledge".
Today we are walking you through an exhibition created from our memories of the homeland. We are carrying you eastward so that you could have a glimpse of the mentality of the people living there.
Let's call us Easterners. It will save us from the length of the phrase "residents of contemporary Russia and Belarus".
There are a lot of differences between the "democratic" empire of Russia and its semi-autonomous ally Belarus. But the two regimes are largely on the same page - trading natural resources, harassing the independence of the Ukrainian neighbors and using extensive police force to make sure of the population's obedience.
