It started as a simple service in the community assignment: every 12th grade girl from St. Hilda's School was assigned to an elderly person in the nearby town of Brickyard Falls. Your simple task was to make a weekly visit, help out around the house, and keep your senior citizen company.
After the scandalous case of St. Nicolas' Kitchen, which you, Amanda Jones solved, it was considered that the new program would offer an opportunity for development, restoring the prestige of the school, and (most importantly) keeping the 'Student Sleuth' out of trouble.
And so, your visits proceeded at the home of 84-year-old Ada Shrapnel. A pleasant and trusting old lady, Mrs Shrapnel was lively at first, but as the weeks went by, she became gradually more frail and eventually bed-ridden. Unable to manage her large and ancient home alone, she relied on staff to help: hiring a maid to help the existing housekeeper and gardener.
Your visits proceeded as before but, relieved of the need to carry out chores, your time became focused on reading books and newspapers aloud at your host's bedside. All should have been straightforward and harmonious, with no hint of trouble. And yet, you found it...
